What is the first thing anybody turns to when first trying to learn a new language? Textbooks.
No matter who you are, without fault, you will get a textbook sooner than later and start learning your language using it.
But unfortunately, textbooks are not here to teach you real life.
Just like you got your personality and first words from experience in the real world instead of a textbook, new languages need to be apprehended in real life, outside of textbooks.
Yes, let’s start with the first misunderstanding you could find in this article: I am definitely not telling you to get rid of your textbooks.
They exist for a reason and it is a simple one: help you in your learning journey.
And the keyword here is “help”.
Nobody picks up a textbook for the pure goal of finishing it as a standard book. You pick it up because you are well-aware it contains information that’ll help you get closer to whatever you want to achieve. In this case: learning a language.
Textbooks contain important information such as grammar explanation, answers to questions you may have, lists of useful vocabulary and so on. For this alone, buying a textbook is a good enough investment.
Textbooks are printed books. They are written down, reviewed probably many times before hitting the market and being for sale.
By the time you get it, many years may have passed.
I, for example, own a textbook from 1992 for learning Burmese. Clearly, it has aged. And unfortunately, since I am using it to learn, I don’t know where it’s aged well and where it hasn’t.
