What Determines How We Behave?

Human beings are complex organisms. We have evolved from our ancestors that were hunter-gatherers and that lived in caves into societies that live in cities, and have a very highly evolved life.

The modern life we live is highly influenced by technology and much different from that of our ancestors. But much of our behaviour is influenced by our evolutionary makeup.

Besides, the societies we form have evolved to be more complex and sophisticated. And this impacted our behaviour individually and socially as a whole.

People are instinctive. Much of what we do is influenced by our instinct. We might not understand why we make the choices and decisions we make but we often do things intuitively following our instinct.

People are value-driven. People have interests and preferences, likes and dislikes, choices and priorities. These form their values. And these values determine peoples actions and behaviour.

People want to be in control. We like it when we have autonomy over the things we do. We like it when we have agency and mastery over things. This strong wish drives our behaviour.

Change occurs in people’s behaviour because the things we want to control, our values and instinct also change. And all of these are interrelated to one another.

Our actions and behaviour derived from these make us the individuals we are and define us as a person.
