Once upon a time, I was almost recruited into the scammy world of Multi-Level Marketing(MLM) or Network Marketing. It was a warm sunny 2020 afternoon. I was broke, desperate, and ready for a change. A deadly combination in my book.

However, I often wonder, if you strip away the bile-inducing and manipulative tendencies of MLM to look beneath the surface, can we learn invaluable skills from it?

What is MLM?

Money and commission are made by either selling MLM products (cosmetics, clothing, health products) to customers or recruiting new distributors, at which point you earn a commission.

While I was aware of pyramid schemes, I had a sketchy view of how MLMs operated.

It didn't take me long to realize that MLM is a pyramid scheme in bootleg Chanel.

On that warm sunny day- let's call her Meg, slid into my DMs respectfully with sweet promises of a ‘business opportunity’. The said opportunity would give me a life of passive income and exceed my expectations. That should have been my first clue, but as I said, I was desperate.

We chatted, bantered, and made shallow jokes. It was all good. Then the foreplay began. Numbers were exchanged and the excitement of an expectant call took over. I was nervous.

Over the next 2 weeks of our Zoom and Whatsapp conversations, I got a surface level introduction to what this business opportunity looked like.
