In Defense of Writing for Medium

The platform isn’t perfect, but it’s the best I’ve found.

I write a lot of articles for Medium. Very few of them deal with writing for Medium itself, but I felt compelled to broach that subject today.

I see lots of articles about wringing for Medium. Generally, they are positive, but a few, not so much. Admittedly, I’ve been writing for Medium for a relatively short time. I posted my first article in the last part of January. I wrote over 100 pieces before I had anything that was curated.

All of that changed when I wrote, Things You Should Know When You’re 60.

Currently, that story has received 26K views and 15K reads and made me about $700. And it’s still earning for me. It opened a lot of doors for me. Up until then, I was a bit frustrated with Medium but having tried other venues, I had determined that Medium gave me the best chance for success.

I’ve said before I’ve seen a lot of pieces about what it takes to make money on Medium. Many of them conflicting. I can just tell you what works for me. I do write a lot. I try to post an article every day. I treat it as a business. It’s a business I enjoy, but I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t think I at least had a chance to make some money.

For your own sake, and to keep your level of frustration down, have realistic expectations. Generally speaking, most people don’t care about your angst as a struggling writer. They have their own problems. I suspect that many people feel that if the writing thing isn’t working out for you, get a real job. I’m not saying that’s a good thing, I’m just saying I believe that’s what a lot of readers would think.

Also, be realistic about your abilities. Frankly, we’re not all great writers. Personally, I don’t have a great American novel in me. On a good day, I might crank out a decent short humor piece.
