The importance of being ready when opportunity appears

I learned about my sister’s adventure only a few days before she left, which is typical of the way she likes to roll. When she called to let me know her upcoming travel plans, she told me it was a last-minute opportunity she couldn’t pass up.

She described their detailed excursion itinerary, a list of clothing she’d be taking, and her expectations of the ultimate view when she reached the awe-inspiring archeological site.

Of course, I had concerns about her traveling to another part of the world. At the top of the list were security issues, time zone changes, and — since my sister lives in the mostly flat topography of the Midwest — variations in altitude and weather she’d encounter on the way to Machu Picchu’s nearly 8000 ft. elevation.

But most important in my mind was whether she’d have the time to take the necessary steps in preparing herself both physically and mentally for the climb. Because, true to her nature, my sister had decided to take the more demanding and strenuous walking route rather than the more frequently used train.

My anxiety level increased when she told me the trek to the site was a four-day 44km hike along the Inca Trail. The most strenuous day would test anyone’s endurance — a 15km trek starting with a steep climb to 13,000 ft, then back down to 6000 ft. before again ascending to a 13,000 ft. elevation to cross a pass.
