When a Teacher Hates You

A One of a Kind Comedy Sketch

The sketch created by my group stemmed on the idea of having a teacher who absolutely hated a student. Certainly, we’ve all received a lower grade on an assignment than someone else who put in much less effort, making the first scene very relatable. However, the scenes escalate and build into more rare, unlikely situations, which reveal the intensity of the teacher’s hatred towards the student.

I personally took pleasure in playing the role of the cruel teacher, Ms. Papperman. Although the character’s disposition and attitude stray far from mine, it was exciting to take on the role and attempt to seem like a mischievous teacher through my attire, makeup, and hairstyle. My toy dog was a simple, yet key element that added to the wicked persona I portrayed, as well as the growing mustache, wacky hair, and darkly it office. Overall, working on this sketch was a wonderful experience, embodying creativity, wit, and teamwork.

I enjoyed working with my team the most from this sketch. We all had unique ideas and brainstormed easily, feeding off of each other’s plans. The acting was very natural because we thoroughly developed our plans and fully expressed what we had envisioned to the point where we all had similar expectations. Our personalities meshed very well together as we all brought different aspects to table. Additionally, we were all very easy going and calm, making the filming experience very relaxed. We gave each other the confidence necessary to perform and all considered the sketch to have a high priority. Driven by imagination and willpower, the sketch was quite a success.

One key aspect weighed much heavier on the final product than I had expected: the power of editing. Though I was aware of the importance of script creation, acting, and various methods of humor, I failed to realize the impact of editing on a sketch until I saw it in action. With incorporated sound effects, background music, and inserts, the sketch’s overall emotion was emphasized.

Ultimately, this sketch was a wonderful experience, and personally the greatest project of my fall semester in both final quality and enjoyment. I have learned of the importance of camera angles and editing and strengthened friendships with my fellow classmates. Aside from the technicalities such as script writing, I’ve discovered that sketches are only as good as we make them out to be. No matter the plot, how well a team works together on the sketch is what makes it beautiful.
