Some of the best Twitter threads from 2018

As evident from the title, this blog post is about the gems I across on Twitter through 2018 although it was a byproduct of my social-media-induced-dopamine addiction (which I’ve overcome).

As Facebook continues to fight ‘fake news’, Twitter, to a large extent, has bypassed that. For me, it continues to be the best platform for consuming news & following relevant folks from various industries who don’t put a filter while sharing learnings/thoughts unlike on LinkedIn or Facebook.

Erik Torenberg’s thread on the importance of building personal moats wrt career has a Tweet-thread-inception filled with some serious knowledge bombs. As we continue to go from jobs to jobs, it’s important to have the self-awareness of what’s our core skill set and how we (will) add value to a company — combine these two and you’ll be in a much stronger place while negotiating for your next role. Erik’s thread covers how to build these skill sets, compound them over time, and of course, understanding the uniqueness of these skills.

Finally, ending the post with two fun ones.

Full disclosure: I’ll be the first to admit that I was a social media addict maybe because I started my career in social media marketing almost a decade ago or was it the other way round? 🤔Anyway, my ‘addiction’ had a small nuance attached to it — the content I consumed online wasn’t from my social circle but predominantly news, on self-improvement (I know, ironic), and general topics that I care for. For as long as I can remember, my Facebook feed has been 60% world & tech news content, 30% music, and 10% social circle — hiding friends from homepage feed was, and still is, FB’s best feature.

However, while I was going through my ‘funemployment’ phase earlier this year post Uber-Grab merger, I found myself sucked into online content’s rabbit hole, primarily through random videos that Facebook would suggest on its app, it was borderline alarming. I decided to cut back. Had to. I took a knee-jerk reaction of deleting all the apps but soon realised I had very little to almost no avenues as good for consuming news that was actually relevant (Flipboard and a few others still don’t do justice). After giving myself a 2-month break on all platforms I started getting active again but this time starting only with Twitter, and that too through its mobile web — best decision. Why? Because I got my dose of content consumption that I needed without stepping into the evil app UX meant for keeping users engaged and locked in. Mobile web interfaces continue to be terrible across the board, be it FB, Insta, Twitter or what have you, but it still works fine when it comes to spitting out relevant updates. This continues to be my way of using these platforms.

Hope you find some of these useful. Until next time ✌🏼
