Talking Out Loud In A Coding Interview

I was born in Vietnam. As a daughter of busy home-based business parents, I was protected and encouraged to stay home and study which was not necessarily a bad thing. I learned pre-elementary math (if it was even existed), was top 5 in math class, attended a regional math tournament for secondary school students, made it to one of top 3 highschool in SaiGon. It was not really big thing, actually, there were couple thousands of students like me.

To be in this list, I had to study a lot, but, most importantly, learned to focus on thinking.

When I was in highschool, it was my skill.

Now, at 27, I am in a coding interview, it is my ‘curse’. [Sigh]

Most of coding interviews requires ‘talking out loud’ which is completely opposite to my strongest skill.

You know. I feel that the ‘talking out loud’ skill, in the near future, will be end up like the ‘multi-task’ skill.

Have you ever heard about the ‘multi-task’ skill ? I’m just kidding. Who does not know!

When is the last time you see ‘multi-task’ skill in someone’s resume? 🤔

Back in college, I worked as a front desk attendant for the school gym. I had to handle multiple tasks. After couple times making mistakes, the supervisor called me in his office after my shift.

He was over 60 years old and the wisest supervisor I ever met. He told me that he started working here 8 years ago, even before the word ‘multi-task’ was born, and he considers that ‘multi-task’ is a fancy self-distraction.

He told me something I remember forever.

Back then, people added ‘multi-task’ to their resumes because it is popular, trendy, and promisingly

Nowaday? Meh.

Interviewee can follow a trend and put a lot of trending skill in resume, but it will not guarantee a quality candidate.

So, before you toss a resume without trending skills, think again!
