North American RLCS is Back!

Finally. After an excruciating nearly 2 month hiatus, the RLCS is back. The 2022–23 Season kicks off this Friday, October 7 at 1 pm EST. Last season saw the juggernaut Team BDS take down G2 Esports to become World Champions and solidify their claim as one of the greatest Rocket League teams of all time. Who, if anyone, will stop them this season? It starts with North America.

After the chaotic Top 16, Open, and Closed Qualifying rounds, we have our final batch of 16 teams competing in the RLCS 2022–23 Fall Open. The top 8 seeds consist of SSG, V1, G2, Complexity, OpTic, FaZe, Rogue, and Dignitas. SSG looked untouchable with their new addition of Lj replacing Retals, now on OpTic alongside AYYJAYY and MajicBear. Complexity, Rogue, and Dignitas turned some heads, finishing better than most expected. The rest of the teams finished about where you would guess, rounding out this very solid top 8 crew.

The bottom 8 certainly raised some question marks. We have NRG, Shopify Rebellion, Knights, Gen.G, FURIA, Luminosity, Sol, and AXLE. NRG continue to raise concerns over whether or not they can still compete with the best. FURIA, freshly moved from the South American region, were predicted to finish top 5 at the minimum in the Top 16 Qualifier, yet they barely finished top 5 in the Closed Qualifier, cementing them as the 13 seed. Knights looked well oiled, with sosa, CHEESE., and .ZPS making up their roster. While there were some scary moments among a few of these teams, the bottom 8 as a whole definitely has the potential to pull off some upsets against the top 8 teams.

So who missed out? The first team that comes to mind is Dark Zero. With the newly formed roster of Zineel, JPow, and the 4-time Turbopolsa, few predicted this group would miss the main event. Akrew looked destined to reach the main stage after taking NRG to a game 5 overtime in their second series, but Team AXLE got the better of them in their fifth series. Ghost under-performed, despite being such an established org in the Rocket League scene.

The 16 qualified teams will now be competing in a Swiss style format. In this format, the goal is to win 3 series. If you are 1–0, then you play another team that is 1–0. If you are 2–2, then you play a 2–2 team. The 8 teams that win 3 series qualify for a single elimination bracket that will ultimately crown the champions of the North American Fall Open.

This RLCS season could very well be the most exciting one yet, particularly in North America. With so many new players, new orgs, and new rivalries, coupled with the OGs, the potential for mayhem is through the roof. It all starts on Friday. Here we go!
