Gap Year Day 124

Today I had the day off from my internship so I planned to go to Kailua and Lanikai, for the beaches and for a hike. I first stopped at Safeway to get change, then I went to the bus stop and caught the wrong bus! Aye! The bus got on the freeway towards downtown Honolulu, the complete opposite direction. So that was quite stressful and confusing, but luckily there were nice people on the bus who recognized I was lost and gave me alternative suggestions.

I changed my plans impromptu and rode the bus till the Ala Moana stop, where I went to Ala Moana Beach Park. It was a gorgeous day — hot, blue sky, and sun. I walked around the park a bit and then hung out at the white sand beach and swam. It’s incredible how warm the water is, like a hot tub.

Ala Moana Beach Park

After some time in Ala Moana, I took a bus to this gluten free bakery and café. They were sampling really yummy baked goods, including cinnamon buns and this wonderful pastry with gooey chocolate and cinnamon I think. I ended up getting a turkey artichoke sandwich on herbed bread with arugula and this jalapeño mayo. It’s completely unlike me to get meat like that, but they didn’t have a veggie sandwich and I felt like it was the best value given the size and price, so I went with it. I needed something to eat, and I’ll justify it with the idea that I’m trying to be more flexible:)

I then took another bus to Waikiki! It was super touristy, but I’ve heard about it a lot and I figured I should check it out at some point. It was kind of fun to walk around the shopping center area, though I didn’t go in any of the stores (most of which were super high end, like Jimmy Choo). I went to the beach in Waikiki too, and it was crazy packed! So much humanity! But it was still a beach, with wonderful aquamarine-clear water that felt so good. I spent awhile there and then caught a bus back to Kaneohe. I had some dinner when I got home and then went to bed — I was pretty whooped after my day of excursion! But I must say, it was relatively successful despite my original mix-up:)
