Live Each Moment

So much emphasis is put on living in the now, living in this moment, being present with whatever is happening in this moment. This seems to imply that it is the moment that dictates how we are to live…we are simply swept up in whatever is happening around us and to us. Perhaps the reason so many people struggle to make this happen is that it doesn’t satisfy…something is missing.

It’s true that we can get caught up heading in either of two extremes…living in the memories of the past (good or bad) or, worrying and planning too much for the future. In either case, we end up missing out on this present moment. But, to put the emphasis on living only in this moment, we are losing out on reflecting upon the things we have learned from the past (or need to), as well as being inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead.

I suggest we live each moment instead. This slight change in wording challenges us to become proactively involved in choosing how we will live each moment. If we avoid thinking about the past, then we will not learn from it. If we don’t think about what direction we want our life to go, then we will miss out on the opportunities that come our way in the future. In living each moment, we choose how we want to live, right here, right now.

There may be things in our past that we need to deal with, to find healing in, so we can move on. There may be things we need to learn so that we can pursue a dream. This may include abandoning old habits and learning new patterns that will better serve us in achieving what we want. Living each moment means we make a choice about how we are going to use our time and energy to move towards life and wholeness.

Each moment is a gift…some choose to ignore it, some float past it, some long for what could be in it, while others open it and delight in what they find. We only have this moment once…it won’t happen again. Our life changes in this moment, whether we are aware of it or not. Isn’t it so much better to be actively involved in where this change takes us?

We need to live each moment with our eyes open. Good things lie in wait for us to discover…the hidden blessings that we’ll miss if we don’t look through the fog. Things like hope, love, acceptance, peace, truth, inspiration, encouragement…just some of the things that are already there if we open our hearts to see.

The blessing of each moment is that we can choose. We can choose our attitude, our direction, our impact. Living each moment sets us free to engage in all life has to offer, neither stuck in past regrets or afraid of an unknown future. While both of those may be true, we are not in bondage to either because we can choose how to live each moment…this moment.
