Super Easy AI with Xnor.ai

Hello!

I just had a really good X-perience with Xnor.ai. I just found them randomly on a news site, because they had created a cool little solar-powered AI chip (see above). Apparently they don’t create chips though, they create really really teeny-tiny machine learning programs, that are small enough they can fit on a chip.

For instance, their emotion recognition program is only 3kb. Definitely big enough to fit on the ESP8266 microcontroller, which has 4mb of disk space. Not sure if Xnor will work on it, may give that a shot.

Anywho.

Here’s what I did.

a. Install Oracle VM Virtualbox

b. Download Ubuntu .iso file

c. Open Oracle VM, make a new machine, select Linux, and click “next” on all the setup windows

d. Turn on the Linux virtual machine, and select the .iso file you downloaded and click ok

2. Linux probably already has Python. Butcha need to install Pip.

a. Open up a terminal. Click the 9 dots in the lower left hand corner in Ubuntu, and click “terminal”

b. Type sudo apt install python3-pip and press enter.

I know that’s complete nonsense, but don’t be intimidated by it. It just says we’re installing shit.

3. Install Xnor.ai’s Developers Kit.

a. You’ll have to ask them for it. It’s a free demo and it’s really, really cool.

4. Instructions for how to install the developers kit are included in that kit, in the Readme.md file. HOWEVER… just to be nice, imma tell you how to do it.

a. After you downloaded the Xnor developers kit, extract it right there in the downloads folder.

b. Close the terminal. Then open it again. Type:

5. Ok now you gotta install one more thing the Python Image Library. Because. Type:

6. Ok now the fun starts. Open the text editor. It’s in the 9-dot place where you found the terminal.

It will open with an untitled document. Save it as “XnorTest.py”

7. Type the following into the text editor:

8. Ok now let me explain WHY these things work.

This says, hey, use that one AI model from Xnor.

This says, I want to analyze this one certain image

This converts the image into bytes so the Xnor AI can chew on it.

This says, hey bro, evaluate dat shit.

This says tell me what you thought bro.

Using this program, I put in a couple pictures of myself smiling, and it said “happy.” I put in a picture of myself not smiling, and it returned “neutral.” Super cool, and for ease of use in coding an AI for image recognition, you can’t beat it.
