Immersive storytelling

The most salient aspects of reality make their way to our simulations. And the errors we notice in these simulations inform us about what missed in our reality.

Creating models of a device thus becomes a crucial first step. The more detailed the model, more the faithful it is to the actual process of creating a device. Flaws become more apparent. I wonder if there is an optimum level of detail, where the cost of modelling additional details outweigh the benefit of prototyping. In any case, later in the class I create a very frugal model.

When brainstorming about a model, collaboration based designing is excellent. The ideas one gains when discussing a project with others is better than when each designs a model in isolation. Together we are greater than the sum of our parts.

Project

We were asked to ask an assigned partner a problem they faced, and come up with a solution by placing ourselves in their shoes.

The problem: Person enjoys walk on the beach or river — standing on the edge of the wavefront, feet touching the ebbing wave, looking at the stars, and meditating at the scene. However, one notices dirt in the form of floating plastic and other debris that distract form the beauty.

Solution: Using an augmented reality screen (on a phone or fitted on glasses) such that the device recognizes, and instantly converts, the image of the debris into something that is not only pleasant but also fits with the user’s fantasy.

A AR screen that alters the image to suit ones desires

Here we see a screen that converts a floating debris in the sea into a table from which protrudes a kraken like monster. The resemblance of the straw-paper kraken to the real monster is striking, and one marvels at the sheer effort that went into the nineteen minutes of its production.

This was also an exercise in empathetic problem solving. Understanding the user’s needs and desires is an important first step to creating a good product/device.
